Winners of COSMIC's 11th annual Young Artist Competition perform with the orchestra.


The incredibly talented 9-year-old pianist Madeline Xu will play Haydn's Concerto in D Major, a refreshingly lively work of great humor. Our senior division winner, Robin Steitz, sings Johann Strauss Jr.'s "Voices of Spring" to put us all in the mood for better weather!


Sponsored by the College of Southern Maryland. Proceeds from this concert will benefit the COSMIC Symphony scholarship for a student of music at the college.

Born in November 2005 in Gaithersburg, Maryland USA, Madeline Wang Xu, is now a third grade student of Travilah Elementary School in Montgomery County, MD, USA.  In June 2011, Madeline began to study the piano with the well-known concert pianist Mrs. San-Qing Lu-Bennaman who was a former soloist of Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, China.  Madeline soon showed a strong interest in piano and a good understanding of music and then her playing skills and musical expression started to take shape.

 

In the years of 2012 and 2013, Madeline has won numerous prizes including the trophy in the MCMTA Judged Recital and the 1st prize winner of the Rockville Competition for Piano & Strings in Rockville MD, USA, and the 1st prizes both in the MSMTA Piano Festival Piano Solo Competition and the Miriam S. Gottlieb Memorial Piano Competition in Baltimore, MD, USA. In June 2013, Madeline won the 2nd prize at the final of The 28th International Young Artist Piano Competition in Washington, DC., USA. In December 2014, she was placed first in the Young Artist Competition of COSMIC Symphony Orchestra in California, Maryland USA.

A nascent young soprano based in Washington, DC, Robin Steitz began her formal study of voice last summer at the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria, where she received the Harold Heiberg Liedersänger Preis for most  outstanding singer of German Lied. She has recently met quite a bit of success in competitions:  in addition to winning the COSMIC Young Artist's Competition this year, Robin will also be performing in the final round of the Howard County Arts Council Rising Star Competition later this month.  Most recently, Robin was awarded the Grand Prix in the Concert Festival International Concert Competition, and will also be performing a winner's recital at the Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall later this month.  Robin is currently undergoing the process of auditioning for graduate voice programs.

In a tour de force presentation, the orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky's Symphony no. 4, and a selection of Dvorak's Symphonic Dances. As a repeat engagement after his beautiful performance of Max Bruch's Scottish Fantasy last season, virtuoso violinist Emil Chudnovsky will play the  concerto by Aram Khachaturian.
