The program also includes Max Bruch's Scottish Fantasy for violin and orchestra performed by world-class violinist Emil Chudnovsky, and Felix Mendelssohn's Symphony no. 3, "The Scottish."

Holiday Program: The Nutcracker

  • Saturday, November 30, 2013 at 7:00 PM in Huntingtown High School
  • Sunday, December 1, 2013 2:00 at PM in Huntingtown High School

COSMIC is thrilled to be presenting Tchaikovsky's beloved ballet this holiday season. Once again, we welcome the world-class professional touring company, "The Donetsk Ballet of Ukraine," directed by Alexander Kerchentsev, in the adult roles. Local talented students from "Ballet Caliente," directed by Sheryl-Marie Dunaway will perform the young people's roles. COSMIC Symphony will, of course, be hard at work in the orchestra pit doing full justice to Tchaikovsky's wonderful score in the only truly live performance of The Nutcracker in Southern Maryland.

Family Concert: Tall Tales

  • Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 7:00 PM in Great Mills High School
  • Sunday, March 9, 2014 at 4:00 PM in College of Southern Maryland, La Plata

Opening this program of music specially selected to appeal to all ages is Rossini's William Tell Overture. More a symphonic poem than an overture you will hear a tale of heroism featuring that gorgeous English horn solo and the even more famous march of the Swiss Army! Next, the winner of the 10th annual Young Artist Competition, 15 year-old Sydney Christley of White Plains MD, will perform the first 2 movements of the Telemann Viola Concerto in G Major. The first half concludes with Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kije Suite, a tall tale of the soldier who never was.

The second half of the concert begins with a performance of Tchaikovsky's Rococo Varaitions for Cello and Orchestra performed by world renowned soloist and educator Dmitry Kousov whom some of you may remember from a few years ago when he played the Sean Hickey concerto with COSMIC. The program ends with a wonderful tale of enchanted dolls in Respighi's orchestrated arrangement of Rossini's piano music: La Boutique Fantasque.

This truly is a storybook event, not to be missed!

Season Finale: From Paris to Broadway

  • Saturday, May 17, 2014 7:00 PM in Great Mills High School
  • Sunday, May 18, 2014 4:00 PM in College of Southern Maryland, La Plata

Join COSMIC as we trace the history of musical theater from the grandeur of the Paris opera to the theaters of Broadway. The concert begins with works by Strauss, Offenbach, Saint-Saens and Rossini and leads us through The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, and Fiddler on the Roof to jazzy Chicago. In keeping with the Paris tradition of including an elaborate dance scene as part of the action in an opera, we are excited to present the world premier of excepts from The Adventures of Nils by Nataliya Medvedovskaya. (Details in our home page "Breaking News" section.)

Local upcoming star, mezzo-soprano Sofiya Schug, sings roles from Cinderella and Delilah to Maria von Trapp.

This is a program of music for everyone: opera glasses optional!
